Expert Tooth Removal by a Periodontal Specialist

When a tooth cannot be saved through restorative treatment, surgical removal may be the best option to protect your oral health and prepare for future restoration. At Foundation Implants & Periodontics, Dr. Cherry performs all types of tooth removal — from straightforward extractions to complex surgical cases — with the precision and tissue-preservation expertise that only a periodontist can provide.
When Is Tooth Removal Necessary?
- Teeth severely damaged by decay or fracture that cannot be restored
- Advanced periodontal disease with significant bone loss
- Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth causing pain, infection, or crowding
- Teeth that are compromising the health of adjacent teeth
- Preparation for orthodontic treatment or prosthetic restoration
- Failed root canal treatment
Types of Tooth Removal

Simple Extraction
For teeth that are fully erupted and accessible, a simple extraction can be performed under local anesthesia. The tooth is carefully loosened and removed with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue.
Surgical Extraction
When a tooth is broken below the gumline, partially impacted, or has complex root anatomy, surgical extraction is required. Dr. Cherry makes a small incision in the gum tissue and may section the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. This approach minimizes bone loss and preserves the site for future treatment.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth (third molars) frequently require surgical removal due to impaction, crowding, or infection risk. Symptoms that may indicate wisdom teeth need to be removed include jaw pain, swelling, difficulty opening the mouth, and pressure on adjacent teeth. Early evaluation — ideally in the late teens or early twenties — allows for easier removal and faster recovery.
The Periodontal Advantage

When a periodontist performs your tooth removal, the focus extends beyond the extraction itself. Dr. Cherry evaluates the extraction site with future restoration in mind — whether that means a dental implant, bridge, or other solution. Socket preservation (bone grafting at the time of extraction) is often recommended to maintain bone volume and ensure the best possible outcome for replacement.
Sedation for Your Comfort
All tooth removal procedures are performed with local anesthesia for a pain-free experience. For patients who prefer additional relaxation, oral sedation and IV sedation are available. Dr. Cherry will discuss the best option for your situation during your consultation.
Recovery
Most patients return to normal activities within 2 to 3 days. We provide detailed post-operative instructions and follow-up care to ensure smooth, comfortable healing. If socket preservation or future implant placement is planned, Dr. Cherry will outline the full treatment timeline.
